When Classics Meets Physics...

Spotlighted Professor: Professor Seth Holm

New Semester, New Officers

“One the things I find kind of fascinating and satisfying this morning in class,” He told me, “was that I had one student who said, ‘You know, I don’t understand a lot of science writings, I just don’t *get* it… but I *got* this poem.” - Professor Bary talking about a student's comment after reading Lucretius' De Rerum Natura.

Professor Seth Holm is a visiting professor from Boston and this is his second year with us here at Colgate University. He got his PhD in Classics from Boston University in 2013, and his main focus in the De Rerem Natura by Latin poet and Epicurean Lucretius.

Ancient Words of Wisdom

If you go to dinner without writing a will.
There are as many deaths waiting for you
As there are open windows above your head.
Therefore you should hope and fervently pray
That they only dump their sewage on you.

- Juvenal, On the City of Rome
